What is SPOT?
Do you ever ride your motorcycle in remote places where there is no cell phone service? Of course you do! Those are the places that have the best riding!
Motorcycle riding can be a dangerous hobby, but now we have the ability to summon help even when we are outside of the cell network. The SPOT Satellite Messenger will work from nearly every point on the surface of the earth and is very affordable.

The SPOT has a GPS that tracks your exact location. In the event of an emergency you simply hold down the 911 button for two seconds. The SPOT sends your exact location to the emergency response center and they contact the people that can help you. It does not matter if you are crased somewhere in Alaska, stranded on a desert island, or just severely injured on the Blue Ridge Parkway; once you press the button help is on the way!

The SPOT has other uses as well. Included with the basic package is a “check in” feature. If you want your friends and family to know you are OK just press the OK button! They are instantly notified via email or text message that all is well and it gives them your exact location.
Maybe you need help, but it is not a true emergency that requires medical care or a rescue squad. Press the Help button and a help message will be sent to whoever you have chosen.

Can you think of another use for the SPOT Messenger? No problem. By logging into their web site you can configure the SPOT to send a custom message when the button is pressed.
Feel free to have lots of fun with the unit because your yearly subscription includes unlimited messaging.
As if this all were not enough you can also subscribe to tracking. When the SPOT is in tracking mode it sends your location every 10 minutes to the people on your list. Now your friends and family never need to wonder where you are!
How will Tank use his SPOT?
All this information is also viewable through a web site where you can allow the entire world to track your progress or updates. You are in complete control of what messages can be seen and who can see them. You can allow the entire world to see all your messages or you can put a password on your page and only allow people with the password to see your OK messages. It is all up to you to configure and you can have up to 10 different pages to allow everyone to have exactly the access you want them to have. Click this link to see my tracking page.
I plan on using the SPOT every time I set out for a ride. There is a map on the front page of the site that will show the last location I was at when SPOT checked in and how long it has been since my location was updated.
