The Elvis Ride 09/19/2006 – Tuesday

It rained all night long Monday night and we woke up Tuesday morning to more rain.  The weather forecast did not look good at all.  Rain all day and the temperature dropping to 40 degrees.  We were supposed to leave the Gap and head into Georgia and then towards Birmingham, but I kind of thought if might be a good idea to just stay at the Gap one more day until the weather blew through.  Mark would hear nothing of this and was totally in favor of heading out, so this is what we did.  It turns out that this was a good idea because it was not long until the rain cleared up and we really did have a beautiful day of riding.

The bike started acting up again so we stopped by Smith Power Sports in Hayesville for them to take a look at it.  Once again, the bike cleared itself up on its own.  They really did seem to want to help out, but it is hard to fix something that is not broken.  We decided to just press on and either the bike would fix itself or break permanently.  Truth is it really has not acted up any since.  Just a few small tantrums.  I suspect the problem is with the throttle position sensor.

We took 129 down into Georgia and some sections of 129 were spectacular in Georgia.  We took 60 back north to Two Wheels Only.  It seems like a nice place, but it was quite dead when we were there.  One of the reason we came this was was because of Wolf Pen Gap.  Mark read about this a couple of years ago and we have always wanted to check it out.  It turned out to be a bit of a disappointment for us.  It really was a nice road, and it it was located near home here in Ohio it would be a spectacular road, but it is not the type of road I would be willing to ride 650 miles for.  The road was bumpy, narrow, and ran through a lot of residential area.  Not even close to the Gap.  That being said, Rt. 60 was awesome.  A very nice ride and if you are in the area don’t miss it.  I think Wolf Pen Gap is simply a marketing thing.  Of course, Deals Gap is also a marketing thing, but at least the road is deserving of the hype it gets.  We met a bunch of scooter guys at the beginning of Wolf Pen Gap, and they were pretty cool.

Driving around Atlanta was a real nightmare.  That is the only way to describe it, nightmare.  I was really wishing I was back in the mountains.  In Atlanta I no longer felt like a motorcycle adventurer, I felt like a TARGET.  I don’t know how people can live in a place like that and fight that traffic every stinking day of their lives.

Once we got into Alabama we settled down for the night in a Motel 6.  This room cost only $32!  Mark has me sold on Motel 6.  Their rooms are nothing fancy, but they are clean and the beds are comfortable.  Clean and comfortable is all I really need.  30 dollars a night really helps out the trip budget also.
