The Elvis Ride 09/23/2006 – Saturday

We woke up once again to an unbearably hot day.  We headed straight to Graceland which was just down the street.  Graceland was OK, but I wish we had skipped it and just continued to ride the Natchez Trace Parkway.  Still, it was the Elvis ride and how could it be the Elvis ride if we did not visit Graceland?  They gave us these strange little walkman like devices to narrate our tour.

There is much debate as to whether his name is correctly spelled above.  Some say that his is evidence that he is still alive.  If you want to find out all about it, just Google it.  Lots of people are spending way too much time wondering if it is spelled right or wrong.

Finally or luck had run out.  Shortly after leaving Memphis the storms finally caught up with us, and boy did it storm.  The bummer of it was we kept getting ahead of the storm and having it catch us again, so I have no idea how many times we saw the leading edge of the storm.  It rained like I have rarely seen it rain before.  Still, we were comforted by the fact that we had seen worse.  At least it was above freezing.  Truth is, riding in the rain is just like riding on a sunny day except the road is more slippery and you cannot see where you are going and it is very wet.

Above right we are stopped at a gas station in Kentucky.  The woman who worked there said they were having some Harley dirt drags this weekend and commented that you would think they would check the weather before they rode all the way there.  I did not even try to explain it to her.

We arrived in Elizabethtown, KY and stayed at a Motel 6.  We got into a Ryans buffet just before quitting time.  Usually places really try to get rid of you when it is near quitting time, but they treated us really well.  We needed some warm food in a dry place really bad after the misery of riding in the storms.  The storms were so severe there was no telephone service in Elizabethtown, so many places would not take credit cards.

After dinner I washed all my clothes in the Motel 6 laundromat and I was all dry and comfy again!
